The short answer
Most gum inflammation (Zahnfleischentzündung, gingivitis) needs no ozone — or any other special treatment. It is the reversible early stage of gum disease, caused by plaque at the gum line, and in the large majority of cases it settles within one to two weeks once that plaque is removed properly and kept off. Ozone reduces bacteria at a treated spot for a few seconds, but it removes no plaque, no tartar (Zahnstein), and it does not address why the inflammation started. Where it may genuinely be worth considering is narrower: an inflamed flap over an erupting wisdom tooth (Weisheitszahn), a painful ulcer, a sore area under a denture (Prothese), or inflamed gum around braces. As a routine add-on to a cleaning appointment it is an optional private expense — and we will say so rather than sell it to you.
The uncomfortable fact about gingivitis
It is the most common inflammatory condition in the mouth, and the least in need of technology.
Plaque accumulates where tooth meets gum. Within days the body reacts: the tissue turns red, swollen and soft, and it bleeds when brushed. Nothing is destroyed yet — no bone lost, no attachment lost — and the picture reverses when the plaque goes. Which produces a deflating conclusion: the effective treatment for ordinary gingivitis is thorough removal of deposits, at the practice where hardened tartar has formed and by you every day afterwards.
The corollary deserves saying just as plainly. Bleeding gums are not normal. Healthy gum no more bleeds when a toothbrush touches it than healthy skin bleeds when you wash it. People often react by brushing that spot more gently, which lets more plaque accumulate, which increases the bleeding. The way out is cleaning it better, not less.
What causes it — and why the cause decides everything
Plaque drives nearly every case. Several things make the same amount of plaque do more damage, or make it harder to remove:
- Tartar, whose rough surface holds new plaque and cannot be brushed off
- Hormonal changes — pregnancy and puberty make gum tissue react more strongly to the same deposits
- Mouth breathing, particularly at night, which dries the front gums
- Smoking, which narrows the small vessels and suppresses bleeding, so inflammation looks milder than it is
- Certain medications, including some for blood pressure and epilepsy, which can cause gum overgrowth
- Overhanging edges on an old filling or crown, creating a place no brush can clean
- Braces, retainers and aligner attachments, which add surfaces and corners
- A period of reduced ability to clean — an arm in a cast, illness, or needing help with daily care
Read that list and the role of a brief antimicrobial application becomes clear. Ozone lowers the bacterial count for a moment. It cannot smooth a filling edge, change a medication, remove tartar or brush your teeth tomorrow morning.
Gingivitis or periodontitis? The distinction that changes the plan
| Gingivitis | Periodontitis | |
|---|---|---|
| What is affected | Gum surface only | Fibres and bone anchoring the tooth |
| Reversible? | Yes, usually within one to two weeks | No — lost bone does not return |
| Typical signs | Redness, swelling, bleeding when brushing | Pockets, receding gums, bad breath, loose teeth later |
| Core treatment | Removing deposits, then daily cleaning | Cleaning root surfaces below the gum, then long-term aftercare |
| Insurance | Check-ups covered; professional cleaning generally private | Treatment covered on an approved plan |
| Role of ozone | Optional, rarely necessary | Optional adjunct after mechanical cleaning |
If pockets, recession or loosening are already present, you are in the second column and a different article applies: Ozone therapy for periodontitis: what it can and cannot do (EN).
Where ozone can help — and where it cannot
The narrow situations where it earns its place
These share a pattern: a defined sore patch rather than a general state, often too painful to clean.
An inflamed flap over an erupting wisdom tooth. Gum partly covering the tooth traps food and bacteria underneath. Rinsing and cleaning under the flap remains the main measure; ozone may be used alongside it. If the cheek swells or you struggle to open your mouth, that is no longer a local problem and needs seeing urgently.
Painful ulcers, aphthae and herpes lesions. Ozone is sometimes applied with the aim of easing the local bacterial burden while a sore heals. Any sore that has not healed within about two weeks should be examined, whatever has been applied to it.
Sore spots and fungal inflammation under a denture, where correcting the fit is the actual treatment and a local application may accompany it.
Inflamed gum around braces or aligner attachments — or any spell when cleaning is genuinely difficult, after hand surgery or during illness — alongside better technique and the right interdental tools.
What it will not do
It removes no plaque and no tartar — a gas detaches nothing from a tooth surface, and everything else follows from that. It replaces no professional cleaning. It does not last, since ozone becomes ordinary oxygen within seconds. And it corrects no mechanical cause: an overhanging filling edge or a pressing denture needs adjusting, not disinfecting.
Repetition is not a plan either. If the same gum keeps flaring up, the useful response is to find out why — an unreachable niche, a cracked filling, a change of medication, or gum disease already past the reversible stage.
Additional step
What actually clears it up — the two-week plan
Get the tartar off. Hardened deposits mean a practice appointment: a professional cleaning (professionelle Zahnreinigung, PZR) removes what a brush cannot.
Clean between the teeth, daily. This is where gingivitis begins and where a toothbrush never reaches. Interdental brushes in the right size for each gap do more than any rinse; use floss where gaps are too tight. If you change one thing this week, make it this.
Brush the gum margin, not just the tooth. Angle the bristles slightly towards the gum line and work in short movements without pressure. Scrubbing hard damages tissue and cleans no better.
Expect bleeding to rise slightly for a few days, then fall. Inflamed tissue bleeds when disturbed, and persisting through that phase is what resolves it.
Treat mouthwash as a supplement. A rinse removes no deposits, and long-term chlorhexidine use brings taste disturbance and staining.
Then keep the check-ups. Annual check-ups are recorded as stamps in your bonus booklet (Bonusheft), and an unbroken record raises the fixed subsidy (Festzuschuss) your fund pays should you ever need a crown or denture: from 60 % of standard care to 70 % after five years and 75 % after ten. Gum health and a small financial reward run on the same appointment.
What is normal — and when to make an appointment
Special situations, and what to know if you are new here
Two things surprise newcomers here. The check-up is genuinely worth using, for the bonus booklet reason above. And a professional cleaning is generally private rather than covered — some funds contribute through their own programmes, so ask yours. Keep one phrase ready whenever something optional is proposed: is this covered or private, and what happens if I decline? A written estimate beforehand is your right, and so is saying no.

Almost certainly not as a first step. Routine bleeding responds to removing the deposits and cleaning between the teeth daily, and usually settles within one to two weeks. If it has not improved by then, what matters is finding out why — and that needs an examination.
They do not compete. The cleaning removes the deposits causing the inflammation; ozone briefly reduces bacteria at a site. Choosing ozone over the cleaning leaves the cause where it was.
No. Ozone is private whatever the reason: the examination is covered, the ozone is not. Details in What does ozone therapy cost in Germany? (EN).
With proper plaque removal, most people notice clearly less bleeding within seven to ten days and a settled gum margin within about two weeks. If nothing has changed, book an appointment.
Bleeding gums in a child are nearly always a brushing-technique matter, sometimes combined with a phase of erupting teeth. Better technique, help from a parent and a check-up come first, not a private treatment.
Gum inflammation is the one stage of gum disease that genuinely reverses, and it does so with a clean gum line rather than with technology. Ozone has a narrow, honest place around it — a sore flap over a wisdom tooth, an ulcer, a tender spot under a denture — and no useful role as a routine addition to every cleaning appointment. Two weeks of thorough cleaning between the teeth will tell you more about your gums than any optional extra you could pay for. If the bleeding stops, you had gingivitis and you have treated it. If it does not, let us find out why.
